Thermal Behavior and Moisture Transport in High-Performance Facades: Design Considerations

1 AIA LU/HSW Credit Presentation
Date: Thursday, December 8, 2022
Time: 10:00am - 11:30am PT

Guest Speaker: Ajla Aksamija

This 1-hour presentation will cover methods for designing high-performance facades, specifically focusing on thermal behavior and moisture transport in various exterior wall assemblies. The facade is one of the most significant contributors to the energy budget and the comfort parameters of any building. High-performance facades use the least possible amount of energy to maintain a comfortable interior environment, which promotes the health and well-being of the building’s occupants.

The session will introduce building science principles that govern facades’ thermal behavior and vapor diffusion, and it will discuss thermal comfort parameters and measurements for understanding occupants’ comfort. It will also introduce methods and simulation tools that can be used to analyze heat transfer and combined air and moisture resistance in facade assemblies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify how material characteristics affect facades’ thermal behavior
  • Learn about design strategies that can be used to improve facades’ thermal behavior, minimize thermal bridging, and improve occupants’ thermal comfort
  • Learn about air barriers and vapor barriers, and how to select appropriate types based on climate and building’s operation
  • Learn about simulation tools that can be used to analyze facades’ thermal behavior and moisture resistance
