Best Practices for Water Management for Walls with Exterior Insulation

AIA/CES Registered Program (1 LU/HSW)
Date: February 24th, 2022
Time: 10am - 11:30am PT

Guest Speaker: Steve Easley, Building Science Expert

New energy efficient construction requirements and codes are moving towards requiring exterior insulation. This can create conditions where wall systems have much slower drying potential and reduced capacity for inward and outward drying. The result is a greater potential for expensive moisture related wall defects and failures.  Steve Easley explains best practices for water management and how to use rain screen systems that provide simple, cost effective solutions to prevent water related damage and how to reduce costly defects.  Steve uses pictures from his forensic experience to examine field failures of a variety of cladding systems.

The learning objectives for the presentation are:

  • Walk away with the knowledge to specify and build water managed walls using rain screen systems to create ventilated cladding systems and how to integrate with exterior insulation.
  • Understand the pros & cons of the three most common approaches to water managed wall systems and how these methods differ for barrier wall, concealed barrier walls and rain screen wall systems.
  • Understand the building science behind how walls get wet and the factors that most affect their ability to dry.
  • Identify the construction mistakes that lead to water related failures, costly call backs litigation and affordable, reliable solutions.
