Shaping the Future of Exterior Textures – Collaborative Feedback Session with DLR Group

By Yusuke Kawasaki, KMEW Japan

DLR Group, a firm with extensive architectural experience in the United States, provided us with a comparative assessment of our new texture designs. Based on their feedback, we plan to refine our product in collaboration with the product development team at our headquarters in Japan to better align with the current needs of the U.S. market.

Their commitment to sustainability sets them apart as industry leaders.

Evaluation of Texture

We received valuable insights regarding exterior wall textures from a design perspective. The following points were emphasized:

  • Visibility and Scale Perception
Textures with intricate details appear attractive up close but may lose impact when applied to large surfaces. Therefore, when selecting a texture, it is important to consider the scale of the building and the typical viewing distance.

  • Adaptability of Simple Designs
Patterns featuring simple lines were highly rated for their versatility across various architectural styles, particularly for large-scale buildings. These patterns create a uniform texture that contributes to cohesive and aesthetically pleasing designs.

  • Popularity of Natural Material-Inspired Designs
Designs replicating natural textures were well received for their ability to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. These designs are expected to be widely used in residential buildings and accent walls. While they contain decorative elements, they can also impart a modern look, depending on their application.

Evaluation of Color

The selection of colors for new products is influenced by regional climates and architectural trends. The key insights include:

  • Regional Preferences in Color Selection
In regions with frequent cloudy weather, such as Seattle, bright pastel colors are rarely used, with subdued tones being preferred. Conversely, in areas with longer sunlight exposure, such as California and Arizona, more vibrant colors are often adopted.

  • Harmony with the Surrounding Environment
Buildings are expected to blend into their surroundings, making color harmony with the natural environment essential. Subdued tones and hues resembling natural materials were particularly appreciated for residential and public buildings.

  • Importance of Diverse Color Variations
To meet the diverse demands of clients, offering a broad range of color options is crucial. In addition to standard colors, providing variations tailored to specific regions and applications can help address a wider range of market needs.

Conclusion

This evaluation confirmed that balancing design aesthetics with practical functionality is essential when selecting textures and colors for new products. Additionally, choosing appropriate designs based on building scale and environmental factors is key. Moving forward, we will integrate this feedback to develop exterior wall materials that cater to a more diverse range of markets.
