Shaping the Future of Architecture: Trends and Innovations in Siding with OBR Architecture

By RYusuke Kawasaki, Ryoya Namiki, Shoko Nadata, KMEW Internship Program

In recent years, the evolution of siding has been remarkable, making it an indispensable element in architectural design. Particularly in the United States, buildings made from a combination of several materials are gaining popularity, and fiber cement siding stands out for its ability to replicate a variety of designs. In this interview with OBR Architecture, we explore the latest design trends, colors, functionalities, and future outlooks.

About OBR Architecture

OBR Architecture is an innovative architectural firm based in San Diego. The firm offers a wide range of services, including architectural design, interior design, and event space planning, all tailored to meet client needs. OBR places a strong emphasis on community and cultural connections, focusing on creative and functional designs. By breaking away from traditional norms, the firm brings clients' visions to life, creating unique and impactful spaces. Their commitment to sustainability and artistic innovation continues to inspire designs that contribute positively to the community.

Patterns and Colors: Diversification of Design and Trends

Laminate panels and traditional fiber cement products often face challenges in conveying natural textures and color tones. However, the texture of CERACLAD's new product introduces thoughtful design elements to avoid repetitive patterns, ensuring a more natural appearance.

Currently, colors with depth—such as the "Burnt Wood: Mahogany" shade—are popular in the market. There are also predictions that darker tones, as well as fresher and lighter shades, will grow in popularity. Additionally, custom colors are expected to shift from grays to blacks, dark charcoals, and earth tones. New products under development are exploring gradient patterns using multiple colors, emphasizing a natural texture. Furthermore, creating color combinations that harmonize with surrounding buildings is expected to become an increasingly significant design approach.

Functionality: Improving Durability and Sustainability

As CERACLAD's technology advances, the functionality of siding has evolved considerably. Durability and sustainability are now key themes, highlighted by CERACLAD's triple-coat finish that ensures long-lasting beauty. The siding is also designed to withstand weathering and wind loads.

Sustainable materials and construction methods are gaining attention, and enhanced functionality provides significant advantages in today's market. When selecting exterior materials, balancing design and functionality (while considering cost) is crucial. However, OBR Architecture places a stronger emphasis on functionality.

In San Diego, where UV impact is high, OBR is particularly interested in siding materials with superior color retention. Additionally, CERACLAD’s capability to be installed on higher floors makes it a reliable choice for urban projects in the Bay Area. As environmental concerns grow, CERACLAD's EPD certification supports the vision of a sustainable future

Conclusion: The Future of Siding that Balances Design and Function

The future of siding design is moving towards achieving a balance between aesthetics and functionality. Advancements in materials and coating technologies are leading to finishes with exceptional durability and weather resistance, available in a wide range of natural-looking colors and patterns. However, continued effort is required to avoid design monotony and adapt to evolving color trends.

While high standards in design and functionality are essential, sustainability will play an increasingly important role in product selection. CERACLAD's commitment to producing innovative siding solutions positions it at the forefront of architectural design, paving the way for more beautiful and functional buildings. We look forward to seeing how CERACLAD continues to shape the future of architecture.

Yusuke:

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to do this interview today. You created a very friendly atmosphere, which allowed us to conduct the interview in a relaxed manner. When we return to Japan, we will do our best to commercialize as many of the ideas we received today as possible.

Nami:

Thank you for sharing your honest insights during the interview. Learning about the thoughts and background behind your designs provided valuable guidance for our future product development. Moving forward, we will focus not only on trends but also on the stories behind them as we create new products. We hope you look forward to what’s coming next.

Shoko:

Thank you very much for taking the time to meet with me despite your busy schedule. I was impressed to learn that color trends have already shifted in the U.S., even though gray tones are still popular in Japan. The discussion about exterior materials and the ideas for other potential uses were both fascinating. I’m excited to provide feedback to the product development team based on our conversation. I look forward to your continued support moving forward.
