Kilburn Architects Discusses the Potential of Ceraclad
By Yuki, Yoshi & Tak from KMEW Japan
Quality, Aesthetics, and Flexibility Required in Today’s Architecture
Kilburn Architects is an architectural firm dedicated to creating high-quality buildings that stand the test of time. The firm values collaboration and clear communication with all stakeholders—from the early stages of a project through post-completion follow-up.
In this interview, we spoke with H. Todd Kilburn, Principal of Kilburn Architects, who shared valuable insights into the appeal and potential of Ceraclad. The candid perspectives offered from the field are an invaluable asset to our product development efforts and provide important guidance as we shape the future of Ceraclad.
Below, we highlight the key reasons Ceraclad continues to be chosen, as revealed through our conversation
Before getting into our discussion, we wanted to open with an introduction to our new printed mural technology.
Ceraclad’s Printed Mural Program is an innovative solution that significantly expands exterior design possibilities. Customer-provided digital designs are processed and directly printed onto panels in Japan, offering higher quality, lower cost, and greater durability compared to hand-painted murals.
The program has already been used on projects in Victoria Island and Vancouver and has been shown at Buildex Vancouver and the 2025 Osaka Expo. Each panel is carefully numbered to ensure the joints appear seamless, earning high praise for enabling large-scale, cohesive designs.
When asked, Mr. Kilburn mentioned that he has not come across a need for a full mural on his multifamily buildings, but found it interesting as a new technology and suitable for logos and store signage on his buildings.

One of the strongest takeaways from the interview was the high value placed on Ceraclad’s design qualities.
Key Strengths Highlighted
- Vertical-line patterns paired with vertical installation create aligned joints and a strong sense of cohesion.
- Enhances visual unity, allowing the building to read as a continuous surface.
- Excellent compatibility with metal accents for a modern aesthetic.
- Calm color tones that maintain presence even on large-scale projects.
- No repainting required, providing significant maintenance advantages.
- Proprietary rainscreen technology received strong praise.
- A unique clip system improves installation efficiency.

These insights, that we recieve from our Partners, provide valuable direction for the continued refinement of Ceraclad’s design and product capabilities.
Constructive Suggestions for Improvement
- In North America, particularly the Pacific Northwest, wood patterns must appear highly authentic to be viable.
- Concerns were noted regarding repeated pattern textures.
- Interest in a broader range of white and gray color options.
- Preference for long-term color availability without the risk of discontinuation.
Through this interview, the reasons CERACLAD continues to be chosen became even clearer. After years of working with CERACLAD, Kilburn and his team have developed extensive experience and a deep understanding of the product’s characteristics and installation methods. As a result, quality, construction speed, and cost remain consistently high.
Well-established verification processes provide strong confidence in both finish and durability. This foundation enhances construction accuracy on-site and enables precise responses to project-specific design and installation requirements.
The feedback reaffirmed that CERACLAD is:
“An exterior cladding material that professionals on the front lines can continue to use with confidence.”
We will continue to evolve CERACLAD to remain the exterior material of choice for architects, builders, owners, and residents.
